Last Thursday, the HISD school board met for its monthly public meeting. Missing from the agenda was a proposal to contract an external performance audit of the budget. Although the district is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, this community needs assurance that the district’s finances will be secure in the years to come. Though many acknowledge the lack of funding coming from the state, our leaders need to make sure that the resources we do have are being used wisely. The board approved the budget for this year with the promise that the district wouldn’t end up with another $100 million shortfall next year. The only way to do this is to have an external organization conduct a performance audit. As the needs of our district continue to increase, we must ensure that our district is in the best financial position possible to serve our students.
