Why do we keep talking about the budget??? As you may have already heard, Houston ISD faces $208 million in cuts this year. The proposed cuts will likely result in major layoffs, and our students will ultimately have to deal with the consequences. After the $107 million shortfall last year, we asked all school board candidates to request an external performance audit of the budget to make sure they were spending every dollar in the best interest of students. All candidates publicly pledged to request such an audit by the end of February 2018, and five of them now sit on the board. It’s time for them to make good on their promise. With all the proposed changes coming up, it is imperative that our board ensure that cuts to the budget stay as far away from the classroom as possible, and the best way to do that is to get an expert opinion on how to best handle their financial situation. Find out how they handled this matter and other important issues at the last board meeting.
